Specular behaviour of waves

  • Specular behavior of waves at material interface.
  • Part of the incident wave is reflected off the medium and part is transmitted into the medium. Both reflected and transmitted waves are modified in amplitude and phase based upon material properties
  • Transmitted wave diminishes in amplitude (attenuates) as it propagates through the material.
  • Attenuation is achieved through dielectric conductive loss, magnetic loss or both.
  • Attenuation measures the energy that is absorbed solely due to propagation through the material and is calculated based upon material properties.
  • Insertion loss measures the total power loss due to attenuation and reflection. It is what you measure on the other side of the material. It is a function of material properties and thickness.
